Chapter 14

Lyra

I was terrified

We stood staring at each other, not one of us moving.

Until the Shadow Wolf did.

I screamed when he lunged towards me, pinning me onto the ground. I couldn’t breathe as I watched the slobber from his fangs drip onto my chest. I turned my face away, unable to look at the horror in front of me. He howled, lifting his head to the roof. It sounded more like a war cry. Getting ready to attack me.

Something caught my eye on the wall. It looked like a word written messily in blood. In red letters.

It said: CURSED

I remembered the story about the villagers and the sigma. The witch who had cursed him to look like a monster of a werewolf. He didn’t look like any ordinary werewolf. From my guess, he was eight feet tall with the body of a linebacker covered in hair.

“You wrote that?” I said in a calm voice, turning to him. The color in his eyes shifted for a moment from angry red to brown. He looked like he was taken aback by my question. It took all the courage I had in me to touch his gigantic paw lying next to me. I swallowed, thinking about all the omegas he murdered in cold blood in this cave.

I could be next if I wasn’t careful.

In a split second, his eyes shifted to red again, and he lowered his head, ripping my jacket apart with his fangs.

I screamed, and he began huffing wildly. As if excited by my discomfort. His slobber spilled all over my leggings, a wide toothy grin on his face. I screamed again when he ripped my shirt open, exposing my bra. He was growling and roaring. Getting more and more frenzied.

I had to gain control of myself.

Taking a deep breath, I stopped screaming and touched his face instead. He stilled as I tried to project a sense of calm into him. It was no different with horses. His huffing began to cease, and his eyes began changing to a calm brown color again.

“You didn’t become like this on your own,” I whispered. “You were a powerful sigma.”

His eyes became shiny, like he was about to cry. He lifted his head to the roof of the cave, a long howl emitting from him.

“Shh,” I said, seeing his bloody ankles wrapped in chains. "Do you want me to free you of these chains?"

I sat up when he moved off of me.

I started working on the chains, unwrapping the long link around his ankles. He stood still as I untangled him. The chains were rusty and old, covered in years of blood. Or maybe it was just rust. His rank odor nearly killed me as I worked underneath him.

Maybe if I unchained him, he would leave me the hell alone. And I could actually survive this. I didn’t mind setting him on his own people. Because as soon as I unchained him, he would run.

After all, they did try to kill me.

Using a hairpin of mine, I was finally able to unlock his chains.
